American radio network CPRN selected the Lahti SO as one of the 30 greatest orchestras
25/09/2006
During the week of September 25-30, the Classical Public Radio Network (CPRN) is celebrating The 21st Century Orchestra. CPRN will be playing recordings by 30 of the world's greatest "living" orchestras, and Lahti Symphony Orchestra is one of them. Other orchestras include the Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonie, Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam and major American orchestras, such as Boston Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra and Cleveland Orchestra.
CPRN is a national, 24-hour classical music radio service, which is heard across the USA. CPRN will play several selections from the recorded repertoire of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, and offer brief "biographical" information about the ensemble. Throughout the week, they will also have commentary on today's orchestral issues from Henry Fogel of ASOL and Allan Kozinn of the NY Times, as well as dozens of artists, conductors and orchestra leaders. In the programmes there are discussions how the leading orchetras are rising to modern challenges involving economics, technology, venues, repertoire, audience building and youth outreach.
The spirit of the week is celebratory. The 21st century orchestra is alive and well. It attracts talent to its city. It nurtures talent and exports it to the world. It creates new music. It revitalizes the city through music and architecture. It helps create new ensembles. It is successful because the community embraces it as a symbol of pride. These are powerful messages during this time of concern for the living arts.
