During his long relationship with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, Osmo Vänskä has made his way all the way to the top as one of the most prominent conductors in the world. Vänskä has conducted numerous recordings, among of which, are the highly praised and awarded Sibelius recordings with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra for BIS Records. In 2003-13 he worked as the Music Director of the Minnesota Symphony Orchestra, regarded as one of the best orchestras in the United States.
Vänskä’s music career began by playing the clarinet and he completed his studies in conducting at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki in 1979. His international career started in 1982 when he won the international conducting competition in Besançon, France.
In December 2000 the President of Finland awarded Osmo Vänskä the Pro Finlandia medal in recognition of his achievements with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. In September 2005 Vänskä was awarded the Sibelius Medal by the Finnish Sibelius Society in recognition of his long-standing service to the music of Sibelius with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, both in concert and on record.
