BEETHOVEN’S FIFTH
Contemporary, classical or neoclassical? American Peter Lieberson’s breakthrough work from the 1980s is like a small symphony, and a particularly beautiful one, as one reviewer of the premiere put it. Beethoven’s Fifth, on the other hand, is a quintessential classic, with a driving theme that has become a shared heritage for all Western listeners. Finnish-born American virtuoso Mackenzie Melemed gives a performance of Einar Englund’s rarely heard First Piano Concerto, the intense defiance of which looks firmly in the direction of the Russian masters of the 20th century.
