In 1803, hundreds of medieval texts were found in the basement of a Bavarian monastery. These Latin poems tell unexpurgated tales about the worldly life of ordinary people, including eroticism, rampant drunkenness and gambling. Carl Orff set these texts when composing his gigantic masterpiece Carmina Burana, a theatrical cantata brimful of drama, with music that shocks, entertains and astonishes us like an irresistible natural phenomenon.
