Vienna, the world capital of music, links the three composers in this concert. Franz Schubert’s Deutsche Tänze anticipate the style of the Strauss dynasty, while Alexander Zemlinsky’s symphony captures the last breaths of Romanticism. Gustav Mahler’s Lied von der Erde, a masterpiece that embraces the whole world, was written against a backdrop of life-changing tragedies. Perhaps the composer’s most personal work, it recounts Chinese stories of beauty, wine, love and the finality of life for us all.
