James MacMillan, from Scotland, is one of the world’s best-loved composers, and Seven Last Words from the Cross is one of his most acclaimed works. Moulding the choir and orchestra into a single instrument, the work is a gripping cross-section of music in different styles and from different places through the ages: a work that skilfully combines baroque music, sacred music, Middle Eastern melodies and 20th-century modernism to bring the Easter story to modern skin. The Lahti Symphony Orchestra’s traditional Holy Week concert begins with the Good Friday Music from Richard Wagner’s Parsifal.
