SIBELIUS’S PIANO MUSIC – LECTURE CONCERT
Folke Gräsbeck, piano
Folke Gräsbeck is going to give a lecture about Sibelius’s lost Symphony No. 8. Temporarily it was numbered as Op. 118 during the creative work, which seems to have been specially active from about 1926 to 1933. Updated facts and assumptions are presented concerning the genesis of this mysterious work. A surprisingly comprehensive material of preliminary sketching has survived from the late 1920s well into the 1950s. Nors S. Josephson made an ambitious attempt to reconstruct the motivic material of each movement of the symphony, which is presented through chosen excerpts. Several musical examples from the 1920s and 1930s are played by Gräsbeck, who received the Sibelius Medal in 2014, with the motivation “Best pianist in Finland on Sibelius’s piano repertoir.”
The lecture is in English
