SYMPHONY CONCERT

Wennäkoski – Shostakovitch – Sibelius

In late November the Lahti Symphony Orchestra will appear at the Stockholm Concert Hall with Dima Slobodeniouk and star violinist Baiba Skride. Before the trip, the orchestra will perform the same programme for its home audience at the Sibelius Hall.

The first work on the programme is Hava by one of Finland’s most sought-after composers, Lotta Wennäkoski – who for example was artistic director of the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra’s Summer Sounds Festival in the summer of 2017, winning huge acclaim both for the concerts as a whole and for her own compositions. The superb violinist Baiba Skride is soloist in Shostakovich’s classic Second Violin Concerto, and the concert ends with one of Sibelius’s best-loved symphonies.

To end the evening we can listen to members of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra playing Dvořák’s String Quintet in G major. This work, in a highly national-romantic style, lasts about half an hour, and follows on naturally from the orchestral programme. This performance is included in the main concert’s ticket price.

During the 2017–18 concert season, small ensembles from the Lahti Conservatory will perform in the Forest Hall before the evening concerts. These ‘Preludes in the Forest Hall’ performances start half an hour before the main concerts begin. The instrumental combinations and programmes will vary from one performance to the next. Free admission.
