Over a million records sold!

The autumn of 2017 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra’s collaboration with the Swedish record label BIS, with very successful results – in all around a hundred discs, including compilations. Worldwide these discs have sold well over seven million copies and have won numerous international record prizes. One significant milestone was the disc featuring the original and final versions of Sibelius’s Violin Concerto (Vänskä / Kavakos / Lahti Symphony Orchestra), winner of a Gramophone Award in 1991. Together with other distinctions, this has contributed to the orchestra’s international reputation and to the commencement of its worldwide touring activity. The collaboration with BIS Records has thus had a very significant impact on the orchestra’s history.

The orchestra’s open-minded approach can also be seen in numerous exceptional recording projects. Its first disc of Finnish Hymns achieved gold disc status in about a month, and the orchestra now has a total of seven gold discs. It has earned platinum discs for the soundtrack to the film ‘Sibelius’ and for its ABBA and Queen discs with the vocal ensemble Rajaton. At the core of the orchestra’s recording activity have been Sibelius and also, since 1992, a productive collaboration with composer-in-residence Kalevi Aho. Among the works Aho has composed for the orchestra are five symphonies, and it has recorded a large proportion of Aho’s extensive orchestral output.
